This term we are reading a new book: The Thief Lord, by Cornelia Funke.
After reading the first two chapters, we discussed the characters that had been introduced and asked: “How does the writer manage to make us feel a particular way about specific characters?” We looked at the character of Esther Hartlieb and conducted a S.T.E.A.L analysis of her character.
A S.T.E.A.L analysis looks at how a character is portrayed through their Speech, Thoughts, Emotions, Actions and Looks (S.T.E.A.L).
Cornelia Funke manages to make us view Esther Hartlieb as a mean, cold-hearted, contemptuous and superficial woman: but how does she do it? Here is the 4/5s’ analysis; the students did a fantastic job of looking for examples of the author’s craft.
